Doolan's Chemistry Class

Matter

Chemistry is the study of matter, the changes that it undergoes, and the energy associated with those changes. There is a very specific vocabulary used to describe matter and these changes. Here we learn the basic vocabulary for describing matter properly as well as begin recognizing and describing the changes matter will undergo.

Assigned Lecture

2.1 - Properties and Changes of Matter
Lecture Summary: To properly describe matter you must classify it as either a physical property (then as intensive or extensive) or as a chemical property. To properly describe the changes that matter undergoes you must look at the properties of the remaining substances after the change has occurred versus what was originally there, or look for clues during the change, to identify the change as either a physical change or a chemical change. Properly articulating properties and changes leads to less confusion when conveying information about the substances we are dealing with.

2.2 - Classifying Matter
Lecture Summary: There are up to  three questions that need to be answered to properly classify matter:
1.) Is the matter uniform throughout?
2.) Is more than 1 substance present?
3.) Can it be chemically separated?
Once we have classified the matter we can determine purity or use chemical and physical separation techniques to further purify substances of interest.

2.3 - States of Matter
Lecture Summary: The state of matter for a substance can be looked at in terms of molecular spacing, volume and shape. The molecular spacing and interactions between molecules leads to distinctive properties of solids, liquids, and gases along with how much heat is required to be added or removed during phase changes.
